How should I store my Alto / Telos / Ikos Tent or Escapist Tarp?

If a tent or tarp is rolled tightly before storing, any moisture trapped between fabric layers can lead to coating degradation over time. If you’ve ever unrolled a rainfly that feels sticky or tacky, that’s a sign the coating has started to break down. Once this process begins, it’s extremely difficult – and sometimes impossible – to reverse.

You may have seen the advice to store outdoor gear in a well-ventilated space. This doesn’t just refer to the room – it also applies to the storage container. Storing a tent or tarp for long periods of time in a sealed bin (like a Rubbermaid tote) traps humidity, which may affect the coating.

In a nutshell

For long-term storage:

  • Avoid keeping your tent or tarp in its original stuff sack.

  • Fold it loosely and store it in a container that allows for air ventilation.

  • Choose a dry, well-ventilated space free from dampness or extreme temperatures.

Proper storage will help maintain the waterproof coating and extend the life of your tent or tarp.
